428 Identification (from Walt Boeninger, walt@chekov.mayfield.hp.com)
---------------------------------------------------------------------
352-390-410-427-428 all have a "352" cast into the drivers side
front
of the cylinder block.
427's are easy to ID by the cross-bolted mains, and if there is a oil
gallery
rib just above the oil pan (forget which side) it's a side-oiler.
If the date code of the block is 1965 or earlier than it can't be a 428,
it's
a 390 or 352.
428's are externally balanced so the flywheel will have a balance
counterweight on it. 390 and 352 are internally balanced, so you
have
to pull the pan to take a look at the crank, and while you're there you
can measure the bore.
That ought to be enough to tell whether you're looking at a 428 or not
If it's a 410-390-352, they're probably all the same value (410 may be
more).

Upper Control Arm Relocation (from Rick Larson, rick@adc.com)
-------------------------------------------------------------
(Editorial note: the template Rick mentions can be retrieved from the
classic-mustangs archive. The file you want is named "lower.ps".
This is a PostScript document, which will of course require a PostScript
printer should you wish to actually print the template.)
Parts and Tools Required
1. Template
2. Jack, jackstands, lug wrench
3. 1/2" socket for shock absorbers
4. Spring compressor
5. 3/4" wrench for control-arm mounting nuts
6. 1/2" drill with a 17/32" bit plus smaller bits for starting holes
7. center punch
Instructions
1. Jack car, remove front wheels and front shock absorbers.
2. Compress spring and remove.
3. Support lower control arm and brake assembly on a jackstand.
4. Unbolt control arm bolts from the inside of the engine
compartment.
For '64 - 66 years, save aligment shims and remember their
original
location.
5. Move the upper control arm, rotor, ans spindle to one side.
Support
brake lines.
6. Bolt the template to the existing holes.
7. Mark new holes with a center punch.
8. Drill new holes. Start with a small bit, 1/4", and work up
to
17/32".
9. Install upper control arms in new holes. For 1964-66, use
the
alignment shims in the same original positions.
Remove an even
thickness, about 1/8" to 1/4", of shims for each position
to compensate
for the increased positive camber.
10. Reassemble suspension.
11. Align front suspension to the following specifications:
Caster 2 degrees
positive
Camber 0 to 1/2
degree negative
Toe-in 1/8"

VIN Decoding (from Scott Hollenbeck, SAH.XSIS-East@Xerox.com)
-------------------------------------------------------------
Classic Mustang Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) contain 11
characters.
I'll use my Mach 1 VIN as an example to explain the different fields.
The VIN in question is "0F05M176979", which breaks down as follows
by character position:
1: Last digit of model year ("0").
1970
2: Assembly plant ("F"). Dearborn
3,4: Body serial code ("05"). 2 door fastback Mach
1
5: Engine code ("M"). 351C-4V
6-11: Consecutive unit number ("176979"). The 76,979th
vehicle built
at Dearborn. Numbers start
from 100,000.
Of course, this translation will be unique for your car's VIN.
There are several sources of information to decode your VIN and your
car's door data plate. California Mustang publishes a pocket-sized
book called the "Mustang Data Plate Decoder", which costs around $5.
There are also computer programs available to decode your VIN; here
are some that I've found and stored in the classic-mustangs archive:
decvin.c
Written by Scott Hollenbeck (SAH.XSIS-East@Xerox.com). This
is a C
language program with a TTY user interface. Requires compilation
to be of any use to an individual. No bells or whistles, but it's
pretty accurate.

351 Windsor and Cleveland Identification (from John Dettori. jdettori@bear.com)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now a 351 Windsor is really a slightly enlarged 289/302, as it's name
implies
it comes from Fords "Windsor" engine family (a.k.a. the 90-degree V
engine
family). The thin-wall cast SMALL BLOCK accepts regular sized spark
plugs,
uses a timing chain in the block, routes water through the intake
manifold,
features thin main-bearing caps, a very good oiling system, and uses the
same
heads for 2V & 4V versions. The heads are are small, utilizing
in-line valves
with relatively small ports. The valves are 1.78" intake and 1.54"
exhaust,
i.e. the same size as a 289/302. The valve covers are straight (front
to
rear), attached by 5 bolts, and when removed you can see 351 cast in the
lifter valley. The small side-by side (in-line) valves are the dead
give-away.
The 351 Cleveland, on the other hand, belongs to Ford's 335 engine
family.
This thin-wall cast BIG SMALL BLOCK uses the smaller 14mm spark plugs,
has
a separate front cover (bolted to the block) housing the timing chain and
routing water - so that water does not go through the intake manifold,
features
beefy main caps (wide enough to drill for 4-bolt mains), a poor oiling
system,
and uses different heads for 2V & 4V versions. The heads make all
the differ-
ence and these fire breathing babies make this motor the legend it is.
On the
4V, the valves are HUGE, measuring 2.19" intake and 1.7n" exhaust (don't
re-
member exactly). Valves this large are only possible via a canted valve
arrang-
ment, forming what Ford refers to as a "poly-angle" combustion chamber.
The
valve covers are not straight - the front is flat and parallel to the
ground,
but a curve twists the rear parallel to the head. They are attached by
8-bolts
and when removed, there is a 4 cast into the corner of the 4V and a 2 cast
into
the corner of the 2V (at least in 1970). The canted valves are the dead
give-
away.
